Ezcap Usb Atsc Receiver Driver

Hello everyone! I am debating on buying an ezcap EZTV306 USB ATSC+QAM Tuner/Capture device to watch OTA free TV and free broadcast on cable TV channels on my laptop. Two questions: 1) Does anyone know if this is a good device? There are no reviews on the internet and apparently it only sells on eBay.

2) I pay my cable company for many channels and some premiums like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax. I have one HD cable box at home.

Can I get a code or something from the cable company to let me watch those channels on my laptop? Well I got the unit in the mail today and hooked it up. It is about an hour since it started searching for channels with its own software. (I have it hooked up to cable using its Clear QAM) So far it has found 376 channels and its not done searching. I have not seen more than one unlocked.

All seem to be locked so far. A bit disappointing as I thought at least I can get some broadcast channels on my laptop this way without an ATSC antenna outside my window and a cble running across the room (I have cable under the desk hooked up to my modem for internet already so it was a matter of splitting the cable).

--------------------- Ok, It found lots of channels (381) out of which probably 25 are not locked. Mostly NHL and NFL. Don't know why but I dont even see a single regular broadcast yet. The software just froze but I think thats my Vista getting hammered with too much crap installed. I will reboot. The quality is good, not 1080p but much nicer than Justin.tv as a comparison.

----------------------- Will keep this thread updated for future reference for anyone wanting to buy this. Here are my first findings on this thing: Pros: 1) Picture quality is excellent. Software that comes with it is on par or better than Windows Media Center in my opinion.

(See pics) 2) Does not slow down the PC, it seems like all processing is done in the USB unit. I was expecting a major strain on CPU.

3) Very inexpensive on ebay (I paid $32. Tortuga Pc Game. 50 including shipping, no tax), and NO I am not the one who is selling them, neither do i know the person. 4) Is comes with ArcSoft TotalMedia software. I like it better than WMC.

Cons: 1) Channel search takes a very very long time. For QAM takes about an hour, for TV takes about 30 minutes. WMC in contrast downloads the TV channels instantly and does not even give you a way to look up QAM (there may be a patch). 2) Software buggy. When I watch TV on secondary Display, my cursor disappears on my Outlook (only outlook so far) that is open in the first Display (laptop).

3) You can not watch TV antenna and then quickly switch to cable. You need to switch through setup and re-search for channels. Well, all I get on TV that is worth watching is 3 out of 5 main broadcast channels, and One on cable (ION channel, the rest are about 10 hockey and a few Korean and Spanish) 4) EPG sucks, nothing like WMC.

5) The remote has not worked so far. 6) Recording 2:13 resulted in a file over 170MB in *.mpg format. The software plays the file but VLC and MPC are not fast enough to play it.
